: The Florida Keys Connecting Overseas to Advance Safe Travel (KeysCOAST) project implements emerging safety and mobility solutions on US 1 (from MM 0.0 to MM 112.5) in Monroe County. Keys COAST will be deployed to make this corridor future ready to serve the existing evacuation route to/from the Florida Keys. This project will be a multimodal corridor management program promoting safety and mobility for all road users. A primary goal of this project is to use emerging technologies to create a safer and more efficient corridor that is prepared to accommodate the latest technology the future holds. The project concept includes roadside units (RSU) capable of Dedicated Short–Range Communications (DSRC) and cellular communications, on–board units (OBU), smartphone on–board units, customized software applications, a cloud-based information dissemination platform, Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM), and cyclist and pedestrian safety applications. These project components will provide FDOT District 6 the ability to perform active arterial management strategies through real-time assessments along US–1. The project is broken into smaller phases or component projects which will deliver the various services of the overall concept.
The FDOT District 6 Keys COAST (Pedestrian / Cyclist Safety) project will implement automated alerts to pedestrians and cyclists at roadway and intersection crossings using Connected Vehicle technology to communicate with personal computing devices such as smartphones.
