FDOT District 5 SR 40 ITS Safety Deployment (Wildlife Detection and Warning)

Project Description: Project includes wildlife detection sensors and a combination of roadside and in–vehicle warning devices at the project locations.The warning system is expected to:
• Detect animal presence on the roadway and near roadway
• Activate warning beacons to alert drivers
• Collect and store the data of animal detection and make the data available for performance evaluation
• Allow the Department to independently operate the system without a third party's involvement at the completion of the project.
This project utilizes Connected and Automated Vehicle Services already in place with FDOT Central Office (CO) including Object Registration and Discovery Service (ORDS) and Security Credential Management System (SCMS). See the regional architecture for those services and interfaces between the D5 elements and the FDOT CO elements.

• 2: The field element shall distribute advisory information, such as evacuation information, wide-area alerts, incident information, work zone intrusion information, recommended speed limit and other special information to passing vehicles using short range communications, under center control.


• FDOT District 5 Field Equipment - Roadway Basic Surveillance
• 1: The field element shall collect, process, digitize, and send traffic sensor data (speed, volume, and occupancy) to the center for further analysis and storage, under center control.
• 2: The field element shall collect, process, and send traffic images to the center for further analysis and distribution.
• 4: The field element shall return sensor and CCTV system operational status to the controlling center.
• 5: The field element shall return sensor and CCTV system fault data to the controlling center for repair.

• 7: The field element shall collect operational status of the warning system field equipment and report the operational status to the controlling center.
• 8: The field element shall monitor the warning devices and report faults to the controlling center.

• 1: The center shall monitor, analyze, and store traffic sensor data (speed, volume, occupancy) collected from field elements under remote control of the center.
• 4: The center shall distribute road network conditions data (raw or processed) based on collected and analyzed traffic sensor and surveillance data to other centers.

• 5: The vehicle shall present the received information to the driver in audible or visual forms without impairing the driver's ability to control the vehicle in a safe manner.
